The Burj Khalifa was designed by Adrian Smith of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, whose company designed the Willis Tower and the World Trade Centre. Hyder Consultants was selected as the lead engineer, and NORR Group Consultants International Limited was chosen to oversee the project architecture. The design is based on the Islamic architecture of the region, such as the Great Mosque of Samarra. The Y-shaped three-part floor geometry was designed to optimize residential and hotel spaces. The supported central core and wings are used to support the height of the building.
